CampNaNoWriMo Update: Week Two

campnano

Another week has gone. “What?” I hear you fellow CampNaNo participants cry. Yes, we are half way through April and I have no idea how that happened. Again, I have been busy with keeping my six year old entertained throughout the Easter holidays, but I have had a productive writing week. At the beginning of the week, I started falling behind on my daily targets, and then I missed 48 hours of writing altogether. The last part of the week was my redemption. Call it a spurt of inspiration, but I got myself back on track in just 2 days. Phew.

Excerpt:

“If you haven’t noticed, we’re at war. We’re fighting for our lives and freedom, people are dying, and some are still in those centres that these guys rescued a good percentage of you from. Yet, here you are, whinging and moaning because you can’t wash every day, you’re tired, you’re hungry. Well, guess what? We’re all hungry, and we all stink, and we all want to not be able to smell the latrines, but we’re lucky that we are eating, we are safe, and we have got a hole to crap in. Do me a favour and show some damn respect for the three people who are holding this mess together.”

Are you participating in CampNaNo this month? How has your experience been so far? Feel free to drop me a comment.

Update 19/2/17

book-review8

It has been nearly five weeks since my last update. Oopps! I have been working on both EVO Ghost and Zombie Playlist since the last update, so working out the word count is going to be interesting. I haven’t thought to do a word count in these last five weeks, and I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing.

Word Count:

On the 13/1/17 my EVO Ghost word count was 27k. I am now at 38.5k. I didn’t check my word count for Zombie Playlist in January, but I am at 12.5k now, so I’d hazard a guess that I have written about 4k in five weeks. EVO Ghost steals more of my attention, so 4k isn’t too bad.

Researching and Note-Taking:

I may not have written more than about 15k in five weeks, but I have been researching various subjects for EVO Ghost and filling my notebook like you would not believe. As I have said before, I don’t write well if I plan too much, but recapping on the first two books, and mapping out chapters I have already written, has been useful.

I rarely make notes for Zombie Playlist. The notebook that I use is mini, and I only seem to use it when I’m on the go and can’t get to my laptop. I write long hand to type up at a later date. I’m sure more note taking will occur, but EVO Ghost takes priority. Sorry, Dagger, but you have to wait your turn!

Busy Bee:

This week has been a particularly bad writing week. I say week, more like ten days. I’ve had a lot on: school craft afternoons, half-term holiday, three parties, family visits, a wedding, a gardening day… It has been never ending. If I really wanted to, I could have written between six and seven in the mornings when my daughter eats breakfast and watches TV, or for a few hours in the evenings once she was in bed, but I simply didn’t want to. I’ve had a nice week reading and watching Netflix and Amazon. I’m catching up on Black Sails, and have now entered the last season of Breaking Bad. Yes, I’m late to hop on the band wagon, but I’m here now. Oh, and I also watched all of Santa Clarita Diet.. and season three of The 100. Not forgetting, I’m up to season two of Peaky Blinders and episode three of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice series. Okay, okay, I’ve watched a lot of TV.

March is the Month:

I have told myself to treat March as a deadline month. I don’t actually have a deadline, or set one for myself, but I would like to write at least 1k words a day, making the most of those early morning hours and evenings where possible. I’m not too fussed if I fall short on the 1k daily goal, as long as I’m actively writing every day. I shall let you know how I get on when I remember to post another update.

Excerpt:

My excerpts shall be short to avoid spoilers.

Zombie Playlist

“There’s a car. Does that mean someone lives here?” King whispers.

“How do I know? I can’t see through bloody walls.”

“Then, we knock.”

I look to him in disbelief. “Season yourself up first. It’s only right if you’re going to serve yourself up as a zombie snack.”

“So, we’re going to break into someone’s house?”

“What are they going to do? Call the police? If you want, you can stay here, and I’ll scout the place.”

He doesn’t take much convincing. His knuckles turn white from gripping the bat, and he sinks further into the grass. “Don’t kill anyone who is alive. Please, Dagger, I mean it.”

“As long as they’re not trying to kill me,” I say, climbing the fence and sprinting to the side of the building with my gun raised.

EVO Ghost

I can’t ask people to fight, Teddie, because I am a sheep in wolf’s clothing. All I can do is try to provide safety- that is my service.”

“Do what you’ve got to do. You’re the one who has to live with yourself and your choices, just don’t judge me on what I have to do, because I have to live with myself too.”

“Although I now see that my campaign was futile, I’m intrigued as to what has changed with you? You would not allow me use your name to further my cause.”

“I’ve found a leader to believe in.”

Grayson lowers his eyes. “Ah, yes, I believe you have. I had to look that man in the eyes today, after betraying him all those years ago. I saw no hate.”

“Rafe isn’t fuelled by hate, but by what’s right.”

CampNaNo Update: Finale

CNW_Winner_1500-1.jpg

Guess who hit their word count goal of 30k words with 3 days to spare? Me, that’s who!

nailed

I’d like to thank my parents for giving me life, my supportive family… haha. In all seriousness, I’m thrilled that I hit my target, but as for completing the first draft of Thrown to the Blue… It’s so so close- frustratingly close.

Although the draft isn’t complete, Ezrahli, Reed, Brenneth, Quinn, Lyerdith, Teal, Lissa, Magdarra, Ageet, Merryn, and Lowven are just some of the characters who have made my NaNo experience pure fun. I’ve loved every aspect of drafting this WIP, and my characters have made reaching that 30k goal all the easier.

Not forgetting my cabin mates. I was lucky to be in a cabin with some Twitter friends and new writing buddies. They are an encouraging bunch, and we are extending our NaNo experience with a closed facebook group to continue to support each other with our projects.

I’m so glad I chose to do July’s CampNaNoWriMo as it has helped me no end with my first draft. I’d definitely recommend NaNo for much needed motivation.

CampNaNo Update: Week Three

CNW_Participant

Another seven days done and dusted. It is technically the end of week three, but there are 10 days left in this month, so my next update will be once NaNo is finished.

My word count for this week is 3645 words. My writing time has suffered due to it being the end of the school term for my little one, but I have still written something at least. The last 48 hours have wielded approximately 300 words, but I’m planning on a writing slog tonight to get back on track. Thankfully, I was on fire for the first two weeks, so I only have to write 7641 words in the next 10 days- totally doable, right? I WILL do it.

morpheus

For now, here is an excerpt from this week’s writing sessions:

A hexagonal shaped room with a vaulted ceiling, which by my estimation is situated in the very centre of the castle, holds pews upon pews of indigo robed sorcerers. The way the pews line up perfectly with all six sides of the room, circling a podium in the centre, is highly pretentious, yet masterfully thought out. They rise as we enter, but I’m sure it is for Teal’s benefit and not mine. Every man present glances over my white hair and shuffles in his seat at the confirmation they’ve all been awaiting. It takes all of my will power not to smile at their awkwardness in my presence. It does not bother me in the least for I am used to making people uncomfortable. In fact, I have mastered that particular art form.

I am aware of how my gown billows out behind me, of how the clink of my heels resounds through the hall as I walk with renewed confidence, and for the first time, I wear this gown without my shawl to show my arms and back. Teal did not say a word. Oh, his eyes certainly studied the tissue like scarring, but he kept his mouth shut. Just how I like it.

“Take a good look, gentlemen,” I say, as we climb atop the podium. “Get the ogling out of the way before we get down to the serious matters. I am not sure what fascinates people the most- the crown, the white hair, or the burns?”

Teal’s mouth twitches in a smile, and I watch a room full of men blush with shame. I’ve still got it. Sometimes, I feel like I lose myself with Reed. He’s my happy place, my curative place, and rather than keeping my darkness company, he heals the cracks and shines light on the shadows. The old Ezra would never have allowed her scars to be seen, the old Ezra would never have taken pity on those poor folks in Pontisef, and the old Ezra would laugh at the mere prospect of a new Ezra. It’s time I find a healthy balance; a hint of the old with a shot of the new.

Camp NaNo Update: Week Two

CNW_Participant

I’m kicking some serious NaNo ass!

cage5

I’m at 18714 words since July 1st, so that means I hit 7871 words this week, and even had time to read and review a book before its release day. If I could bottle this week’s motivation I would, but I neither know where it came from nor how to contain it.

On to more pressing matters… The builder is back from a short break to restart work on the extension. By restart work, I mean drill endlessly and noisily. I’m hoping this won’t affect next week’s word count because I’m so close to the finish line on this draft that I can’t drop momentum.

The other hinderance is the school summer holidays. My daughter finishes for the six week break on July 19th, so Mummy duties take priority. However, I do feel on the ball this year with a fully functioning holiday plan. We will make the most of the holidays, and I will avoid a bored, whinging child at any cost!

Wish me luck…

CampNaNo Update: Week One

CNW_Participant.jpg

Seven days down and 10,843 words written. How I managed it is beyond me. This week has been hectic: my daughter’s sports day on Monday, she ran the Race for Life on Tuesday, and the car got a flat and I had to catch the bus everywhere (unnecessarily I might add.) I thought I didn’t have a spare tyre, only to find out that it’s an under the car, hiding from sight spare tyre. Who attaches a tyre to the underneath of a car?! At least my Dad and husband got a good laugh out of it. On top of that, I had to finish reading an ARC in time for release day, and sort out end of school teacher’s gifts.

tired fall

On the bright side, my cabin mates are great, and I’m kind of glad I signed up late, otherwise I wouldn’t have joined this cabin of talented writers who like to chat as much as I do. It’s also nice to hear that I’m not the only one who has bum days.

Anyway, I start another week with a working car, and not so many sports related events to attend. If I hit another 10k, I will be 2/3 done!!

Here’s an excerpt from this weeks work:

The bird calls start again, and orbs of ethereal, white smoke appear, darting like comets through the glade. I count eight at a glance. Each wisp comes to a stop, evenly spaced out in a circle around us, and then transforms into a figure in a white gown.

I almost fall over my own feet in fright. The figures are female with hair as white as snow. The Coven. Lissa bows her head to the women and steps aside. One woman, with an impressive build and strong face, steps forward. Her straight hair reaches the backs of her knees and moves like a silk curtain.

“Princess Ezrahli,” she says, bowing her head to me. “Prince Reed.” She does the same to Reed. I’m still not accustomed to hearing Reed addressed as a Prince. “We have been expecting you. I’m Magdarra, I head The Coven.”

Staring in awe at the women surrounding us, I search for a feeling of unease that Lissa said I would be able to sense. There is nothing threatening about the women, they do not have aggressive stances or deceitful faces, if anything, they look serene- indifferent.

“I understand your wariness, Princess, but we can assure you that you are safe here. We mean you no harm.”

“You are not Yarnarian,” I say, studying every twitch, blink, and wrinkle on her face.

“No. I am Olysean. We are a varied bunch.”

“And Reed is welcome?”

Magdarra smiles, and some of the women chuckle lightly. “Prince Reed is very welcome. We are not the men haters that the fables would have people believe. I will explain more when we get back to the safety of home. It is not wise to linger outside of our perimeters for long.”

“Protection spells,” Reed states.

“Yes, Your Majesty. We are many, and when our spells work in harmony with each other, not even Lyerdith can breach our defences.” Magdarra places a reassuring hand on Reed’s shoulder. “But currently, we are not within our defences, and I have to insist that we wait no longer. Take my hand.”

Her hand is cool and frail, with an angular feeling from where her bones jut out beneath papery skin. Reed takes her free hand, albeit a little reluctantly, and then it feels as if the world has fallen away from me. It lasts only seconds, but an acidic taste of vomit floods my mouth. I manage to fight away the urge, but Reed succumbs, lurching to his knees to vomit in the vivid grass.

CampNaNoWriMo July

nano

So, I’m late signing up, but I bit the bullet and did it this morning. I’m camping as of tomorrow. Are any of my fellow writers camping in July? Let me know. I’m interested in joining some encouraging, fun cabins.

I’ve set my target at 25k for the month as I have a lot of Mummy duties in July with it being the last month of school before the 6 week holidays- sports day, Race for Life, Induction days etc etc. But 25k would see my first draft of Thrown to The Blue nearly finished. You never know I might smash my target, but I made it achievable and I’m happy with that.

Any CampNaNo tips? If you are signed up give me a shout.

WIP Update #4

Book Review(2)

This update is going to be a little different. I have been solely working on my new WIP, Thrown to The Blue for the last few weeks, and I’m already at the half way point in the manuscript- eekkk. *Does a little author jig.*

Anyhoo, I have been sharing some quotes to Instagram and Twitter, and rather than post a single excerpt, I thought I would post all of my Insta-witter posts. Are you ready:

WIP Update #3

Book Review(2)

I have been holding off with this update because I didn’t feel that I had much to report, but I thought I could still ‘update’ you on my lack of motivation. However, when I started thinking about this update I realised that a lot has happened slowly but surely.

Two WIPs!

I kept being drawn into a new idea (one I blogged about before), and it took my attention away from EVO Ghost. So, I decided to start drafting both. I like to make more work for myself *hehe*.

07a33b391bef10556ac64d9a03508f0e

New WIP:

My new WIP is a fantasy with two POVS- Princess Ezrahli, and a skilled archer named Reed. I wrote 12k words of the draft in just Ezrahli’s POV, and got stuck with how to progress the narrative with the sub-story that she is to become a huge part of. Once I started writing from Reed’s POV, I knew that his narration was equally important, and went back and added/ rewrote chapters.

I have been calling this WIP ‘Thrown to The Blue’ because of an important act that is necessary for witches to have their magic awakened. The title may change, but it is kind of stuck in my head for the time being. I’m unsure if this will be a series or not, but only time will tell. I like the idea of a stand alone book.

Current Word Count: 15,470 words

Excerpt from Thrown to The Blue:

“I wanted to understand, is all.”

“And what is it you think you understand, archer?”

“A lot. I am sorry for you, Princess.”

“I don’t need your pity!” I scream. How dare he? “I am not to be pitied!”

The guards bang on the door at my outburst, throwing it open and almost breaking its hinges. The thunder of feet race through my chambers, and the archer throws himself from the balcony, effortlessly scaling the building like an animal of the night.

“Your Majesty,” shouts a guard, gripping my forearm forcefully. I stare at him in a moments confusion, and then tear my arm from his hold. “Princess?”

“I’m fine. It was just a dream. Get out! All of you get out!” He eyes my wrist, and I pull my sleeve down fully. “I could have your eyes removed from your skull if I wished.”

He averts his gaze, bowing low to the ground. “My apologies, Your Majesty.” He backs away without any further eye contact, ushering the other guards with him.

Quinn slips into the room, rushing to my side as I lie on the bed. He wears a simple negligée, showcasing smooth legs to rival any woman’s. “Was it another dream, Ezra?”

I want to tell him of the archer- of how both he and the guard saw more of the real me today than anyone save him. Even Brenneth has never seen them since I was a child. The words won’t form in my mouth. I feel like there is a mystery to the caped man that I’m the only one privy too, and that interests me more than it should.

“Yes, just another dream,” I say, choosing to keep the encounter to myself. “Tell me a story, Quinn. One of the tales your mother would tell you.”

Lying beside me on the bed, Quinn plays with my hair and recites a renowned story about a Queen who fell in love with a poor man with nothing to his name but an enchanted bow and arrow.

EVO Ghost:

I think I’ve been enjoying getting to know the new characters a little too much and EVO Ghost has suffered because of it. That being said, I have decided on a time jump of about three to four months. Just getting everything in place for that jump has been a slog, but I’m confident it will work out well.  Yesterday, I had a plot twist idea that needs to simmer a little longer in my head. I haven’t even written it down because I want to see where my mind goes with it- if anywhere. It’s a fragile one that has to be handled with care- a ‘this could go amazingly right or drastically wrong’ idea, but that alone makes me keen. Go big or go home, right?

Current Word Count: 23,673 words

Excerpt from EVO Ghost:

Rafe retrieves a laptop from his bed, sits on the pristine, army style sheets, and gestures for me to sit beside him. “Things have stepped up a gear since the rally. What has it been- eight days? I can’t fully believe it myself.” He hands me the laptop, presses play, and gets up to leave, taking the others with him. “Come and find me when you’re done.”

A news broadcast, dated two days ago, plays as smoke billows from a high rise building. People run from the building, clutching infants, carrying injured people, and some throw themselves to the ground in an attempt to put out the flames that engulf their clothes. The news reporter can’t be heard over the noise, but he comes into view, and gestures for the camera to swing to the right.

Soldiers and military vehicles fill the area to the right of the burning building. Every person who rushes out of the flames is restrained by soldiers and tested with a kinetic reader and a swab. Injured men and women are cuffed and thrown forcefully into the back of large trucks with guns trained on their heads; none are offered medical treatment. Screaming kids are bundled into separate trucks from the adults. They look so terrified.

“I thought this was an E.N.C attack,” says the reporter to the camera man, the carnage making him oblivious to the camera still rolling. “I don’t understand this.”

“It’s a flush,” shouts a bloodied man, running passed them at speed. The reporter grabs his arm, almost whipping him off of his feet.

“Can you tell us more about—”

“I’m EVO. We’re all EVO. I need to get away from here,” the man shouts, trying to free himself. “This is a flush. The E.N.C have been protecting us here. The government bombed the building to flush us out. There are children inside. There are kids in there and they still bombed us! Let me go!” He frees himself and races off between buildings.

The reporter just stares at the camera. “It appears this is a government orchestrated attack against EVO. We do not have facts, but… hell, I don’t know what this is.” He pushes the camera aside. “Come on, man. Let’s get out of here.”

I think I have been generous with the long excerpts, but I hope that makes up for my lack of updates.

God knows when my next update will be, but if I have anything to report, I will do.

Confession Time

musings(1)

I haven’t written more than 2700k on EVO Ghost in four weeks! Yep, a whole month with just 2700k. It’s not like I’ve been working on other projects, I’ve literally written 2700k in a month. (Notes not included, of course.) Writing up renewed character notes took days to complete.

Everything written has been by hand, and I found my flow a little. I shall pick up where I left off on the pen and paper drafting. I have some big things planned for EVO Ghost- one of them… finishing the draft haha.

I have, however, read and reviewed seven books in the same month, so no time was wasted. Inspiration just wasn’t rushing through me at all, and even my writing exercises fell by the wayside even more than they already have. Instead, I threw myself into reading the works of many talented and inspiring people in hopes that some of that inspiration would rub off on me. I’m happy to say it has.

bookpile

I had a funny vision this morning of my characters sat around playing cards, waiting for me to come back. I hope it’ll be a warm welcome…
