ARC Review: Taste the Dark by Nicola Rose

Taste the Dark by Nicola Rose 4/5

39317106Jess

I killed my parents. I didn’t mean to, I don’t think. I can’t really remember.

I can’t remember much from the years that followed either, other than an endless stream of bad decisions, generally involving alcohol, drugs and bad boys. My new job in a new town signified a turning point – time to sort myself out.

What I hadn’t anticipated was the 6ft package of brooding, inked-up perfection who started stalking me. And don’t even mention the equally hot brother crawling under my skin…

They radiate danger, it flows around them like a seductive spell; and danger is my favourite word.

Zac

I was doing a pretty good job at balancing on the fine line between light and dark, blurring the edges and living in the grey. But then dead vampires started piling up around me and the Bael gave me a ticking countdown to fix it.

Now she’s arrived. Four seconds – the moment I saw her – that’s how long it took to know that she’d simultaneously bring heaven and hell to my door. I don’t even know what she is, but I know I crave her.

Falling for a human girl has left me teetering on the verge of collapse. This could be just the ammo my brother needs to nudge me over the edge and into oblivion.

Taste the Dark is out 30-4-18! Preorder your copy here.

Review:

After reading Rose’s novella, Breaking the Gladiator, I had no fears about my liking this novel. The effortless writing style, steamy and dark scenes, and captivating narrative made this book a quick, enthralling read. The paranormal elements were handled with the right dose of darkness and believability.  Vampires have been overdone on the indie scene of late, but a fresh, exciting take on the mythical creatures is always a great find.

I can’t say I particularly liked Jess’ character at first, but her extroverted ways complimented the narrative and made her choices believeable. The love triangle was intriguing for sure. There is a Vampire Diaries vibe to this aspect of the story. It was a case of how dark is too dark in your chosen love interest. Well, I know whose team I’m on.

This is a lengthy read and a little slow moving, but the story is just as important as the romance.

Book two is out soon, so there is no need to twiddle our thumbs waiting for more from Jess and Zac.

ARC Review: Carl by Brianna West

book review

Carl (Guardians in Love #4) by Brianna West 5/5

28280106_226883474546089_5362592180987135567_n.jpgCarl, twin of Bernie and respected Promiscus Guardian on Lucas’ notorious team, has spent over a decade in love with a man who will never return his affections. Heartbroken from his unrequited love, he assists another team in an effort to get away. However, an unexpected development with two of the Guardians leads to a love triangle he isn’t equipped to deal with. And when a Guardian he thought dead appears, Carl is dragged into a world of trouble.

Can he figure out the reason for the sudden appearance of an old companion while combatting the affections of two men? Or will the pressure be too much for him and force him to flee?

Can Carl truly love with his heart completely torn to pieces? Or will the risk of another heartbreak make it not a risk worth taking?

Review:

This is possibly the longest I have had to wait for a new release from West, but it was totally worth it. I was excited to hear that this love story would be Carl’s. Level-headed, reliable Carl. Seriously, Carl needed someone special in his life.

This is West’s first same sex relationship story. I was expecting it, as although Carl’s preference wasn’t really discussed in the Promiscus Guardians series, it was kind of obvious who he had the hots for. This spin-off was definitely another steamy hit from West.

Carl’s character development was well rounded and continued from what we knew of him in the Promiscus Guardians Series. It was great to see him come out of his shell and garner a different outlook on love. The love triangle was complicated, and put Carl totally out of his comfort zone, but without it, I doubt he’d have discovered his true feelings toward a certain someone.

The storyline focussed not only on the love triangle, but on a person from his past, and Carl’s need to help them back to the Light. The history of that relationship clearly had a profound effect on him, and mixing that with the new relationships added a depth to Carl’s story, fears, and decisions. As a reader I felt satisfied with Carl’s conclusion and growth as a character.

Holding me underneath my arms, Bernard lifted me into the air with another shout of joy. “Aren’t you just the prettiest gal at the ball!”

He said I was pretty! He actually said it!

Rigid and unable to get my body to react more than it currently was with my hands painfully clutching his shoulders, I gasped and then forgot how to breathe altogether. I was put down before I could get my brain to work properly, swooped up underneath my knees and carried out into the hallway without a breath in between.

Red suffused my body like I’d been immersed in sweltering heat, blushing a violent blood color. Finally, I was able to deliver a swift, unforgiving hit to the overstepping Guardian. The damaging blow my fist dealt to his stomach took Bernard straight to his knees. And a swift second later, my dagger was at his throat the instant his knees hit the floor.

I kept a weapon on my person always. Even in my cute, frilly dress.

“What right do you have—” I started in a low growl.

Bernard leaned forward, coming within inches of my face and baffling me when he pushed his throat into the blade. I instantly retracted my arm so that the dagger didn’t cut into his skin. And when my eyes flicked back up to his face, Bernard was grinning mischievously.

It was downright illicit the look he gave me. It made my heart start up in my chest and pulse thud loudly in my ears as I hesitated with the dagger still gripped firmly in my hand. Bernard took hold of the wrist that held my weapon, caressing the skin he touched with his thumb. Instantly, I dropped the dagger to the floor, the loud clatter echoing off the walls.

“You are mighty pretty in that dress, miss,” he said in a soft, whispery voice. One I hadn’t been prepared to hear from him.

Electricity shot down my spine and my heart skipped a beat. “What…?”

“You’re not being very nice to this lovesick cowboy,” Bernard continued, grasping my wrist tenderly and taking us to our feet.

But after a few breaths, he still hadn’t pull away and I couldn’t move; only listen as his deep, enchanting baritone continued to murmur to me as only a lover would, making my cheeks incredibly hot with each uttered word.

Review: Resurrection by Brianna West

book-review

Resurrection (Promiscus Guardians Book 4) by Brianna West 5/5

17965256_1498125790238833_151642696_nIzzy is back again after managing to survive villain after villain, and now she’s got her eyes on the prize—Mother Dearest. But her world takes a turn when she discovers something that might make her think twice about her usual reckless guns-blazing style.

And when a new evil villain joins forces with Mother Dearest, Izzy and Lucas are forced to partner with someone quite unlikely and a little too close to the villain they’re after.

With the final battle looming and a host of new problems, will Izzy and Lucas find a way to survive, or will the odds be too much and overcome them?
Find out in Izzy’s final kick-ass fight against the Dark Resurrection.

Thank you to the author for giving me an advanced ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review:

Izzy’s wit and humour when it comes to fighting demons is pushed to the limits when she has to team up with one to protect her loved ones, and hopefully, see an end to Mother Dearest. Can she work together with an enemy whilst dealing with a bombshell of a new development? Is there a happily ever after on the cards for her and beau, Lucas?

I can’t believe we’re already at the finale of Izzy and Lucas’ story. It’s been a fast, gripping ride, and although I’m sad that it is over, I can take solace in the fact that West has multiple spin offs set in the Promiscus Guardian’s world. Phew!

Izzy’s quick-witted inner dialogue and brooding inner monologue has seen me laughing through all four books. She is light relief to an action packed, dark narrative. It’s refreshing to read a strong female heroine who still falls over in high-heels, has sarcasm enough for twenty, and can appreciate some eye candy.

The narrative has developed over the four books to include Izzy’s training, her need to prove herself, and her journey to become friend, wife, and demon killer. From the confused woman happening upon two intimidating guardians in a dark alley, to the demon slayer and bad-ass Guardian in book four, Izzy has kept her humour throughout, and remains true to herself.

Paranormal fans will love not only Izzy and Lucas, but the vast array of unique and loveable characters in this series, and will be happy to know that most will be featuring in their own steamy stories in the Guardians in Love spin offs.

Review: When Darkness Breaks by Brianna West

book review(1)

This review has been a long time coming for me. Brianna West is an auto-read author of mine because I love her paranormal romance series and spin offs. If you remember in my last review of her second book in the first spin off series, Guardian’s in Love, I made a hint to West to make a certain character the main protag in his own love story, and guess what? Not only does Simon have his own story, he has his own series! I’m not saying that my request swayed West in anyway, but hey, I’m a happy bunny.

Okay, let me break it down for you:

Original Series: Promiscus Guardians

Spin Off Series One: Guardians in Love

And the new spin off: The Underground Guardians

14914835_1318653744852706_368911467_n

Ebony has spent the last two hundred years trying to escape the Underworld, because who she is doesn’t match what’s in her heart. Being a demon that has a pure heart is unnatural, and those around her, mostly her family, want to keep her imprisoned for the rest of her life.

While escaping, she saves an angel imprisoned in the Underworld and the course of her entire life is change from the moment she meets the mysterious angel, Simon.

With the help of the Promiscus Guardians, and their lesser known subgroup, the Underground Guardians, Ebony is set on a path that will lead her to discovering the true depth behind her power, the value of her pure heart, and a life worth living. But will her undeniable connection with Simon lead to her undoing?

Thanks go to the author, Brianna West, for giving me a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

When Darkness Breaks is due for release in December 2016

Review:

Ebony is a high-demon with a pure heart, much to her family’s disgust. She can’t help but save the angel imprisoned by her father and brother, and in the process she meets the one person who can change her life and offer her something she has never before encountered…true love.

West has upped her writing game with this book. The story neatly runs alongside the original series, but covers a whole different aspect- demon/ dark guardians. The main protagonist, Ebony, is a high-demon and this takes the narrative on a gritty, darker path. I was expecting a stubborn, hard-headed demon protagonist, but was pleasantly surprised with naive, gentle Ebony. West writes her character so convincingly without making her seem weak or gullible.

Of course, there is the much anticipated love story, steamy scenes, action, and dreamy hunks. I mean, I would be pretty gutted if I didn’t get a West classic, but it was made all the better with the love interest being the legendary Simon. I know readers have been desperate to find out Simon’s story.

In summary, another hit from West, and another brilliant start to a series in a world I love.
