Picture This: Episode 9

The penultimate episode of Picture This has arrived. I know I say it a lot, but this year has flown by. I hope you enjoy the following prompt and my interpretation.

Prompt:

My Interpretation:

The waves gently lick at my feet as I watch the sunset, but don’t really see it. I can hear the gentle crunch of sand as Peter approaches behind me. When he asked me to meet him here, I knew it was to talk about everything… about us.

We were so happy, blissful even. Why did we have to come on this holiday? His Dad is so adverse to the idea of me as a long term partner for Peter, a wife, that he declared in front of the whole family in the restaurant that if Peter marries me, he will be cut out of the business and will. It’s also suspiciously convenient that the woman he’d prefer to call a daughter in law is here with us this week.

Peter sighs behind me, but doesn’t say anything. I can’t look at him right now. I need my resolve.

“Let me start,” I say on an intake of breath. “I know how much the business means to you, and I know how serious your father is in his words. Sometimes, love isn’t enough in life. If I thought you’d resent me in one year, five, twenty because you bet it all on me, I wouldn’t be able to stand it. Now, is your chance to walk away. I’ll make it easy and won’t turn back.”

I expect him to say something, but he doesn’t. The only sound is that of his feet in the sand as he walks away. Did I really think he’d go? I don’t know. I see the sunset now, setting on my happiness.
