It happened- another idea bomb has exploded in my noggin. Yes, this one literally blew my brains out, and I was a walking, talking zombie until I could get some notes written. Those notes turned into two chapters. This is snowballing and I think it will be my next release after the third and final installment of the EVO Nation series, EVO Ghost.

I’m not sure if this book will be stand alone or a series, but either way it is going to be a challenge. Hell, I’m up for it. My protagonist is no heroine, in fact you could call her a villain, but as I always say, villains make the most interesting characters. The challenge will be in getting the readers to relate and root for her regardless… Um, yeah, good luck with that Kayleigh.

I’m excited at the prospect of writing fantasy, royalty, new worlds, and complex characters. It’s a good job I’m feeling particularly villainous of late…

    There’s nothing like a good villain. I think what draws people to villains is one (or both) of two things: a sense of power and the ability to relate.

    For example, even when the only Star Wars movie released was the original, people were drawn to Darth Vader because of the power he wielded. If you’re someone in a position of powerlessness, the desire for power along with an absence of fear can be highly enticing. People having to submit to the will of their bosses or being bullied on a daily basis fantasized of being Darth Vader, with the power to strike back and vanquish anyone who challenges using little more than a Force Choke.

    The ability to relate to a villain, I feel, comes from the villain carrying a philosophy that people wouldn’t disagree with. It could also come from the villain going through a tragedy sometime during his/her life, a tragedy people can relate to. Personally, I tend to agree with Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. I don’t agree with his actions (which are what make him villainous), but I agree with a lot of the things he says. And when a villain is born from a tragedy I understand, that causes me to feel something for the villain, even if it’s sadness or pity.

    It could also help to have the villain go up against someone who is even worse, making the reader feel like they’d rather see the lesser of two evils win. This is something I hear a lot of when discussing U.S. politics with someone; they know both candidates are terrible, but they’ll vote and root for the least terrible one.

    So I think that getting people to root for a villain isn’t as difficult as it seems on the surface. That is, unless the villain is killing cute little puppies. 😉

    1. That’s great advice- thank you.

      My protagonist has gone through a horrendous experience at the expense of someone who should never have treated her in such a way. I hope this enables readers to see her motives, if not understand her actions.

      No puppies are harmed in the writing of this novel! haha

  4. Such a great feeling! That’s how you know you’ve got something good, can’t wait to see some teasers 🙂 Making your villains relatable doesn’t have to be all that hard. Your villain-heroine still has needs, desires, goals, fears and all that, and she’s still motivated to do the things she does for one reason or another. We can all relate to that! Just don’t make her kill a puppy or abuse a child, I read those are unforgivable no matter what she does to atone 😉 They are like points of no return, after which forgiveness just can’t happen. Stay clear of those and she’ll be fine! 🙂

    1. The main point I’m getting from everyone’s advice is ‘DO NOT kill puppies’. I think I can manage that hahaha 😉

      Thank you. She has reasons behind her actions, and I just can’t stop writing. I’ve decided that I’ll write until I’ve got every thing down that I need to, before turning back to EVO Ghost. 🙂 It’s nice to have a little respite from Teddie and the gang. My new protagonist, Ezrahli ‘Ezra’, is refreshing to write.

    Idea bombs are the best. And yet somehow the worst when you’re in the middle of working through a story. I always get excited to start working on them right away, and have to stop myself from getting distracted.
    I am loving the idea of a villain as a protagonist. Also, those key words are my go-tos for reading 🙂 I cannot, yes CANNOT wait to hear more about it 🙂
