How Often to Blog?

How often to blog? That is the question.

I have had conflicting advice regarding this topic and I decided the best way to find out was to monitor my own blog posts. I wanted to gauge for myself whether it would be a struggle to find ideas to post about or if I had an abundance of ideas, but not enough days to post them. I started my blog back in June 2015, so it’s still in its infancy, but I have learnt a lot in the last four to five months.

I’m sorry if you’re the type of blogger that I am about to mention, but I cannot stand it when my email is inundated with numerous blog posts from the same blogger all on the same day. I’d rather read one of your blog posts a day, and not feel swamped. I’m a scheduling type of girl and if I do have a bout of motivation and draft numerous blogs in one day, I schedule them for future dates.

My findings:Β

I have plenty of things to post about, but it’s okay to jot the idea down and post or schedule it for a later date. On average I post about 5 times a week, although, I have been known to post every day if I have a lot to fit in. I stick to just one post a day where possible.

Getting into a routine helps. I have allotted slots for certain posts i.e. Mondays are my quote posts and Sundays are my word count posts. Always having something to post about on these days makes life a little easier. I have been filling Tuesday’s slots with my ‘Ten Weeks, Ten Prompts, Ten Minutes’ writing exercises, but they ended yesterday, and I will fill this slot with more writing exercises of various kinds.

If you post regularly you also notice patterns in what sort of posts your followers prefer. That doesn’t mean you should only write posts of a similar kind, but you can judge the style of post and perhaps schedule those posts as regulars.

If you’re new to blogging, I would recommend at least one blog post every two days to keep your blog from falling quiet and to build up your followers. Get interactive, communicate on other blogs, and like and re-blog anything you find informative or would suit your blog. The blogging community is supportive, but you have to return that support.

  1. Great advice, KJ. I wish I’d read this when I started blogging in October, 2014. I’m happy I didn’t know how this thing worked because there was such a freedom in not having to gauge reactions before publishing. Also, I post quite a number of articles privately. I don’t blog every day because I’m really too busy and so are my subscribers. Also, when I’m working on a post, it gets edited up to the last minute. So, posting every day would mean few of the blogs I read would get any attention. I space out my posts to give myself time to catch up with everyone. Last week, I noticed a dearth of posts in my reader and a relatively low number of visits. Everyone was busy up to and throughout weekend, I guess. I used the opportunity to post material I wasn’t expecting a lot of people to see but that I really wanted to post. I rotate my scheduled posts and feature ones I want to be seen, when I am not posting. When activity picks up, it’s like a flood, though, so I enjoy the downtime.

    1. I had to learn as I went along too and at least that way we can make up our own minds as to what works for us. I do think that a blog every other day keeps the page active to encourage potential followers, but each to their own πŸ˜‰

  2. I followed one blog at the very beginning of Cookie Break which posts beautiful short poems, but the author posts up to five times a day (!!) and it’s beginning to feel a bit like spam. So much so that I’m actually tempted to remove myself from her follower count. I understand being excited (Maker knows I couldn’t help myself yesterday, but those maps made for my book were too beautiful, it couldn’t wait πŸ˜› ) but if it costs you followers it’s not worth it.

I schedule posts like you. In fact, right now I’ve got a list of things I want to blog about just in case I forget! I’ve allocated days for certain posts – on Mondays I post 10-Minute speed-writing exercises, Wednesday is quote day and on Friday I post my progress on my book. Tuesday and Thursday are open for everything else! Weekends are quiet, because they are weekends and everyone should allow themselves a break.

Commenting regularly on other blogs you like and getting to know your community are very good tips and things I should do far more often.

    Great post!

  3. Very sage advice! I’m a newbie to the blog world as well. I joined just this September. There’s quite a learning curve that accompanies it. It’s great that there are people like you, willing to share their experience! Thank you πŸ™‚

  4. I feel the same way about getting too much email from one blogger. I tend to Follow anyone who Follows me, on top of the blogs I Follow simply because they interest me. However, when multiple bloggers are sending out multiple posts per day, that can fill up my email inbox pretty quickly. And as you probably know, going through your email can take time away from doing other things such as writing your own stuff.

That’s why I’m glad I found a place on WordPress where I can remove email notices of posts without removing myself from the blogger’s list of Followers. I really do like to allow people to keep me numbered among those who Follow them even if I’m not reading their posts anymore.

If you’re interested, here’s the link:
    https://wordpress.com/following/edit/

All you have to do is find the name of the blogger you wish to cut from your email notifications (which is easy when you use the Find function on your browser to search for the name on the page; I use Firefox, by the way), click Edit, and then click Off under “Send new posts by email.” And now you’re still a Follower, but you will no longer receive emails from the person whenever they post. By the way, if you click the circled X, you’ll remove yourself from their Followers list, so you may want to be careful not to hit that if that’s not your intention.

Anyway, that’s what I do for anyone who posts way too much for my liking. I don’t want to do it sometimes, but for the sake of getting through my email in a reasonable amount of time, it has to be done. Hope that helps you to clean out your email inbox. πŸ™‚

About my posting habits, I think you’ve already seen that I post only once per day. Very rarely have I posted twice in one day, and I always feel bad for doing it. Haha.

  5. Thank you for this. I’m new and uncertain.. I post most days and have fm had a couple of small gaps on exam days etc.. I’ve built up a small following in the month I’ve been doing this. I love it! I completely agree about the multiple posts, quite annoying.
